OnALot.com's Gold Affiliate Program
As a Gold Affiliate, we expect that you are able to construct your own equipment, install it, and maintain it. That means obtaining the parts, physically building the tower mounted radio box, running electrical wiring to that box and making all the necessary connections.
You will need to climb towers, such as a Water Tower, Radio Tower and other similar high places. A climbing belt / safety harness is needed, along with shoes that provide good traction. You will need ropes and pulleys to bring up the radio box, antennas and wiring.
Tools: You will need box, ratchet and adjustable wrenches, screwdrivers, a portable drill and an AC powered drill with drill bits. You'll also need masonry bits to drill through brick walls.
You will need to have a good working knowledge of Windows-based PC's. Your customers will require either a PCI based installation, where you open the computer's case and install a wireless PCI card, or, an ethernet based system, where the wireless radio is a standalone box usually mounted near the antenna, with a CAT-5 cable run to the computer's ethernet port.
All installations will require some soldering. The antenna to radio coax connection is done with connectors that are soldered at the center pin, and crimped on the shield. Therefore a heavy duty soldering iron, solder, and a crimper are needed.
You'll need a vehicle capable of carrying all your equipment plus a ladder. We recommend a 24' extension ladder, but a 20' or 16' will do for most situations. We have found that the 24' ladder and a 6' stepladder make the best combination to cover just about all circumstances.
You will be climbing on customer's roofs - a lot of them in fact. Wireless Internet is done using microwaves in the 2.4 gHz radio band. Microwaves are line-of-sight, meaning, from the customer's roof, you must be able to see the transmitting tower. Bring binoculars for the long distance installs.
You will need a laptop computer to take up on a customer's roof, along with an antenna to do signal checks.
The ideal Gold Affiliate candidate is a Ham Radio operator, Cell Phone technician, or other individual familiar with and comfortable around radio equipment and computers. If you have a fear of heights, this will be a problem for you. You may need to hire someone to do the "way up there" stuff.
From the business management end, you will be contracting with your local phone company for high speed data lines to be installed where your radio equipment is located. This often means putting in telephone jacks in a water tower, with a box that holds your modems and router mounted near the ground, and CAT-5 cable up the tower.
What are your costs? The initial setup of your business will cost you:
- Purchase of all tools, vehicle, ladders (if you don't already have them)
- Purchase of the necessary tower mounted radio equipment, boxes, cables and antennas.
- Contracts for high speed data lines.
- Purchase of equipment that the customer will purchase from you. You'll need to have at least 5 full installation's worth of parts on hand at all times in order to meet what your customer base will hit you with.
- Your website and other advertising material to promote your business.
We estimate that you can get up and running with $2000 - $2500 as your initial investment. Depending on the number of customers you can find, you should get your return on investment in 4 - 6 months and be profitable thereafter.
