How Does Our Wireless System Work?
OnALot.com has antennas up on the top of water towers, radio towers and the roof of some taller buildings. We transmit the internet from those antennas.
We put an antenna on your place, which is connected to a radio modem. That radio modem feeds our signal to your computer, and you get the internet! It's really that simple!
Is It A Satellite System?
No. Although satellite systems are similar, we're not the same. A satellite is launched by a rocket into space, and sits over 22,000 miles above the earth. Going up and back down is over 44,000 miles, and things such as clouds, rain, snow and other bad weather can easily interfere with the satellite's signal, and it quite often does!
We don't have that problem since we're on your local tower, and only transmit a few miles tops to you. Our signals are quite strong, and easily overcome any bad weather, so you get a constant signal! Plus, being so close to you, we don't suffer from misaligned antennas like the satellite systems do!
And don't forget, we don't use or need a telephone line! That alone will save you a lot of money!
How Long Does It Take To Get It?
Depending on your house, it usually takes between 1 to 2 hours to install our system. Longer if you want extra "goodies" like multiple computers or a wireless router for your laptop.
We've been installing our systems since February of 2002. We do a fine job of creating a nice appearing installation that suites your home's exterior. Feel free to tell us about any special needs or circumstances that you may have, we'll do our best to accomodate you.
Will My Computer Work With Wireless?
Our Wireless Internet system easily works with Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000, NT, CE, ME, and 98. It won't work with Windows 95 or 3.1, and you should upgrade to a newer computer if you have one with those versions - they won't work well on the internet anymore.
If you want a multiple computer setup where the computers are wired together, each computer should have a network port, called an ethernet port. We can install an ethernet port if yours doesn't have one. All newer computers already have an ethernet port in them.
Our system also works with Apple MacIntosh computers, provided they have an ethernet port or have Aircard installed.
Linux - If you have an ethernet port, we can install a system for you.
Is Wireless Internet called Broadband Internet?
Absolutely! Wireless Internet is the fastest of the Broadband systems, with speeds up to 54 mbps (megabits per second) Here's a comparison:
DSL - 1.5 to 6.0 megabits
Cable - 1.0 to 9.0 megabits
USB Cards - 0.15 mbps to 3.0 megabits
And of course, Dialup, which is not Broadband. Dialup = 16 kbps to 56 kbps (or 0.016 to 0.056 megabits - pretty slow!)
What Else Works With OnALot's System?
Wifi enabled cell phones, games (both wireless and wired) and any device with an ethernet port or a wifi card inside it. Call us if you are not sure, we'll figure it out.
