Troubleshooting Your Wireless Connection
Sometimes your connection to the internet will just stop, seemingly for no reason. It's usually caused by lightning, static charges in the air, power surges, and if a connector is accidentally knocked out. We have this simple guide for you to use to check out your system before you call us.
We do two types of installations, and you'll first need to determine which one you have. Please run down this list before calling us - the problem is often cured with a simple power reset!
First - Check Your Connections
Make sure all the cables are plugged in. If you have a CAT5 or Network cable, it should "click" when inserted. Coax cables should be fully screwed on to the connector.
If you just moved your computer, make sure all the cabling is in the right spot and seated properly. Make sure power is turned on to everything.
Second - Restart Your Computer
We recommend you turn off your computer every night. It clears the memory and frees up resources that will slowly drain away if the machine is left on for days or weeks.
Installations With a Wireless Router
For most of these installations, we installed an antenna and a gray box outside of your home. The box can be on an antenna pole or under an eave next to the antenna. Some of you may have the gray and silver colored bridge radio inside your home, next to your computer. And some of you may not have a Wireless router, but this guide is generalized and applies to everyone.
Inside your home, you'll find 1 or 2 small black power supply transformers that are plugged into the wall outlet or your power strip. They look similar to this:
One of these will go to your Wireless Router, the other goes to a gob of black tape and the wire going outside and up to the gray box.
What To Do: Unplug both transformers from the AC power, count to 10 slowly, then plug them back in. Your internet signal should be restored in about 30 seconds. If it does not come back on, unplug both transformers again, and let them sit for 5 minutes to fully discharge, then plug them back in. Call us if this does not fix the problem.
For Desktop Computers With An Installed PCI Card
Most single desktop computer installations have a PCI card that we installed. This has a thick black coax cable coming out of the back of your computer, through the wall and up to your antenna.
What To Do: Shut your computer completely off. Don't do a Restart - it doesn't turn the power off. Do a "Turn Off" on your computer, let it sit for a minute, then turn it back on. This resets everything, and the internet should come back on.
Call Us If You Can't Get On
If the above doesn't get you back on, call us and we'll help you.
