Using Outlook Express with OnALot.com
When you called us to join, we added your
email address(es) to our server. Here is
how to set these up using Microsoft’s
Outlook Express. Be sure to read the Helpful
Settings section near the bottom.
Note: Microsoft Outlook
is similar, review the steps below and use
the appropriate information when using Outlook.
Note: You can skip down
to the appropriate section. This guide tries
to cover all possibilities.
Before Setting Up An Email Account...

You already use Outlook Express
If you previously were using Outlook Express
and have switched to Onalot.com, your old
ISP’s email address(es) will still
be there. Here’s how to change them
over so that your new Onalot address(es)
will work.
Note: You will NOT lose
your address book by making these changes.
- Open Outlook Express. Close any error
messages that might show up
- Click on File
- Click on Identities and then Manage
Identities.
- If you see Main Identity, click on
it to highlight it, then click on Properties.
- Enter your name as you would like others
to see it, then click on OK. Do not click
the Require Password button.
- Click Close
- Click on Tools
- Click on Accounts
- Click on the Mail Tab
- Highlight your old ISP by clicking
on it once, then click on Remove.
- Repeat step 10 if there’s more
than one ISP shown.
- Click on Add and then on Mail
- Enter your name as you would like others
to see it. Click Next
Note: for the rest of
these instructions, only use lowercase
letters. No capitals!
- Enter your new Onalot email name as:
yourname@onalot.com. Click Next.
- The first line is POP3
- The Incoming Mail Server is pop3.onalot.com
- For the Outgoing Mail Server use smtp.onalot.com
NOTE: For our Paden customers, use smtp.valornet.com instead
If you
host your own domain with us, use pop3.yourdomain.com and smtp.yourdomain.com
- Click Next
- Enter your email name. Be sure to add the
@onalot.com (or @yourdomain.com).
- Enter your password. Check the Remember
Password button
- Do NOT check the Log On Using Secure
Password Authentication (SPA) box.
- DO check the box that says "My server requires authentication."
- Click Apply
- Click the Advanced tab at the top.
- Change the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) number to 2501.
- Click Finish
- If it wants to import at this time,
click No.
- Click Close
- Repeat the above for all of your new
Onalot accounts.
For a New Email Account or First Time Use of Outlook Express
Use this section to add a new email account,
or if this is the first time Outlook Express
is used on your computer.
- Open Outlook Express
- If it asks to make this your default
email program, click Yes or OK
- Click on File
- Click on Identities, then Add New Identity
- Enter your name as you would like others
to see it. Click Next
Note: for the rest of
these instructions, only use lowercase

- Enter your new Onalot email name as:
yourname@onalot.com (or yourname@yourdomain.com) Click Next
- The first line is POP3

Helpful Settings
Now that Outlook Express is set up, here
are some settings that will make it perform
better for you.
- Click on Tools
- Click on Options
- At the top, click on General
- Put a check in the “When starting,
go directly to my ‘Inbox’
folder”
- At the top, click on Maintenance
- Put a check in the “Empty message
in the ‘Deleted Items’ folder
on exit”
- At the top, click on Connection
- Make sure the “Hang up after
sending and receiving” box is NOT
checked.
- Click Apply
- Click OK
Testing Your New Email Accounts
The fastest way to check your email account(s)
is to send yourself a test message.
- Click on Create Mail
- Enter your email address in the To
field
- Enter Test as the Subject
- Enter anything you like in the body
of the message
- Click Send
- After it’s sent, wait 30 seconds
and then click on the Send / Receive button.
- The email you just sent should come
back to you.
