Music Sharing Programs are Bad!
We've noticed lately that a number of customers are moving a lot of data. In the past this was an indicator of a virus infected computer that was spewing out onto the internet trying to infect other computers. I usually call these customers to alert them to a possible problem. What I've been finding is that they are using Music Sharing programs, and are downloading free music. This is bad for the following reasons:
While you may not agree with it, it's illegal to do, and you can get into some serious trouble if caught. A music sharing program turns your computer into a server, which then sends out the music you have on your machine to anyone looking for it. The result is your computer's hard drive light goes on and stays on, wearing out your drive prematurely. Your computer starts to seriously impact the Onalot system's bandwidth, preventing our other customers from surfing the web. Free music often has a virus or spyware program imbedded in it. You download the song, and you get a free virus or spyware program. This will cost you some money to get repaired. And if someone steals your personal information, you will be in for a long and expensive headache. Bottom line: Don't Do It! There are several low cost websites, such as Napster, where for a very minimal amount, you can download all the music you want, and it will be safe music, free of viruses. And you won't get a call from us or get turned off due to excessive packet transfers.
