Get an Anti-Virus Program!

I visit a lot of customers' homes and offices and sadly, a lot of you don't have up-to-date Anti-virus programs. Either you have nothing at all, or, your subscription has expired. Many people say they have an AV program, but I find them to have expired, making them essentially useless as updates won't load, and they go out of date very quickly. Often, the $40 / year cost doesn't seem worth it, so you let it lapse. OK, let's figure out what one virus will cost you: $40 - $150 to have your computer "cleaned". The complete loss of all your files, photographs, music and documents. You won't have your computer for up to a week while it's worked on. And, if you have a Windows system and don't have the original disks, well, just tack on another $99 for that.

And, while your computer is infected, it's sending out copies of the virus to all your friends and anyone on your email address list - that's how they spread.

OnALot.com recommends McAfee Anti-Virus.  We've found theirs to be the least problematic and easiest to use.  You can buy it online with a credit card at www.mcafee.com - note:  all you need is their Virus Scan product, they will try to sell you other products, but you probably don't need them.  You can also buy their CD at Wal-Mart and other outlets.

You can also get a free anti-virus program from AVG.  Their free product is OK, but we still recommend you consider a purchased product because as the old saying goes: "you get what you pay for".

An AV program is very cheap insurance, especially when you consider that each day, dozens of worms, viruses and spyware target your computer. You are just one mouse click away from an expensive and serious problem. And even if you are very diligent in not clicking on popups, emails and the like, someone else in your household may not be.
